A Pathway to the Soul of all that is

Shamanism and Animism

The basis of all animistic practices is the belief that everything has a consciousness and a soul. It is possible to connect and communicate with this consciousness, even in objects we generally see as inanimate 'things' in our modern world. Many of the traditions known today such as paganism, shamanism, herbalism, wicca, druidry, new age practices and more, are forms of animism. These distinct nature-based practices were born in specific places around the world, but share attributes.

Animism is arguably our species' oldest approach to spirituality and has been practiced since the beginning as a way to connect with nature, experience the spirit of things, and ultimately make sense of the world around us and our place in it.

Inherited Wisdom
of Animism

Our ancestors lived in sync with nature and believed that every aspect of the living world had a consciousness and was an active participant in the common web of life. No rock, tree, animal, or mountain was taken for granted. They were aware of the interconnected nature of all things.

Our ancestors. developed deep spirituality, living, and healing were all part of the same practices in tune with the natural and supernatural worlds. Over millennia, they collected vast wisdom and insight which has been passed down orally, in writing, and within our DNA. Every human comes from a lineage of indigenous wisdom.

The basic practice of living as if everything has a consciousness is called 'animism,' which covers every world tradition with this philosophical base.

What Is Shamanism?

Shamanism is one of the oldest known spiritual traditions and shares core practices across geographical regions - even when called something different.

The original term Shaman (samān) comes from the indigenous healing traditions of Siberia and signifies a very specific lineage. Other unbroken healing lineages in the world have their own words for the medicine people in their society. In modern times, the term shaman/ism has broadened - to some controversy - to include recovered and even new animistic traditions.

A Shaman is someone who works with other-world energies, spirits, and beings through altered ceremonial trance and ritual. The intention is to direct energies to the Earth realm to support others - be they human or non-human beings.

Today, the word ‘shaman’ is the closest generally understood term to describe a practitioner’s role in this work. Many people working within traditions where original indigenous wisdom was lost use the word ‘shaman’ to connect in intention with the all-time global lineage of people working with the spirit world in a specific way to support others in healing.

Irish Celtic Shamanism

Celtic Shamanism is rooted in the ancient indigenous practices of Irish and Celtic peoples of Ireland.

The lineage into which I was initiated through the teachings of Irish-Celtic shamanism by John Cantwell and Dr. Karen Ward of Slí An Chroí - Pathway of the Heart. A marriage of Ireland’s oral shamanic lineage, archetypes, mythology, and sacred sites, Celtic Shamanism includes elements from Core Shamanism, which are drawn from common practices across world traditions, particularly the Incan lineage of the Q’ero people of Peru into which Slí An Chroí founders John and Karen were initiated.
